This route leads you from Volendam through the low-lying peat meadow area of Waterland and its picturesque villages. You will pass Edam and Purmerend and via Monnickendam you have a beautiful view of the Gouwzee and the Markermeer. You start the route at De Dijk in Volendam, the village that enjoys international fame. The regional costume often represents the national costume. When you take a break on the terrace, you are sure to see someone in traditional clothing. You cycle through the low-lying peat meadow area of Waterland, and in Edam you cycle past merchant houses from a bygone era. Here you can still see the boats passing on the terrace of 'De Fortuna' via one of the oldest bridges, manually operated by the harbour master.
