Medieval times, monks and a salty sea breeze 34 km

Let your hair blow in the salty sea breeze. This route leads you from Egmond aan Zee straight through the Noord-Hollands Duinreservaat through the beautiful polder along the Alkmaardermeer to the pilgrimage site in Heiloo and interesting places around Egmond, a unique piece of the Netherlands. You can hire a bicycle at Bike Mike. Enjoy cycling through the dune landscape and see how the land changes, at Knoest it is time for a break on the terrace. Then cycle in good spirits through the Dutch polder landscape towards the Alkmaarder Lake. See the old varieties of bulbous plants. The rest you will find at the holy Runxputte, this is a well-known place of pilgrimage in Heiloo. Also take a look at the little church, and take a sip of the holy water. Cool off by taking a nice dip in the swimming pool "het Baafje". Through the beautiful bulb fields, you will pass the Castle of Egmond aan den Hoef. This Castle was burned down in 1573 under the leadership of Diederick Sonoy. In Egmond aan Zee, you will see Van Speijk's lighthouse. This lieutenant at sea preferred to blow up his ship rather than surrender to the Belgian enemy.
