Medieval times, monks and a salty sea breeze 34 km

Feel the salty sea breeze go through your hair. This route leads you from Egmond aan Zee straight through the North Holland Dune Reserve through the beautiful polder along the Alkmaardermeer to the pilgrimage site in Heiloo and interesting places around Egmond, a unique part of the Netherlands. You can rent a bicycle at Bike Mike. Cycle through the dune landscape and see how the land changes. At Knoest it is time for a break on the terrace. Then you cycle in good spirits through the Dutch polder landscape towards the Alkmaardermeer. View the old varieties of bulb plants. The tranquility you will find at the holy Runxputte, this is a well-known pilgrimage site in Heiloo. Also take a look at the church, and take a sip of the holy water. Cool off by taking a nice dip in the swimming pool “het Baafje”. Through the beautiful bulb fields you will pass the Slotfundament van Egmond aan den Hoef. This castle was burnt down in 1573 under the leadership of Diederick Sonoy. In Egmond aan Zee you will see the lighthouse of Van Speijk. This sea lieutenant would rather blow up his ship than surrender to the Belgian enemy.
