The Amsterdammer J.J.H. Van Reenen was the possessor of the seigniory of Bergen, purchased at auction in 1851. The territory of the Van Reenen family reached down to the beach, creating the first plans for a beautiful resort. Bergen aan zee has now existed for more than 100 years. the first steps to found Bergen aan zee were taken in 1906
The Schulpslag, a cart track from Bergen to the sea was replaced by a handsome access road and the land in the area was made fertile. The landscape architect L.A. Springer from Haarlem then drew up plans for a construction of the Bergen aan zee villa park. This was spearheaded by the current landscape, an English style, as was the Zeeweg which was laid out in 1905. On July 28, 1906, the first stone of Café Prince Maurits was laid, at the location where Hotel Prince Maurits is still located today. For better or for worse, the village was then slowly built up
