Bergen is an attractive village in North Holland with a beautiful wooded area where you can enjoy nature. Behind the dunes lies Bergen aan Zee where you will find beautiful long beaches. So you can imagine wonderful walks and bike rides. Bergen is known as an artists' village and has a huge attraction for many painters, writers and architects. Consequently, there are many activities around art in Bergen. It is also a place with an attractive center where you can fully enjoy many cafes restaurants and stores.

The location and surrounding area of Bergen

Bergen and Bergen aan Zee are near Alkmaar and are easily reached by car. Schoorl and the former fishing village of Egmond also belong to the municipality of Bergen. During the summer months, many visitors flock to the seaside resort of Bergen aan Zee to enjoy a day of sun, sea and beach. This sometimes means traffic jams and on very busy days the access road may even be closed. From Alkmaar, it is best to take the bus to Bergen, which runs twice an hour. Of course, you can also bike here and enjoy the beautiful nature.

Bergen aan Zee

Bergen aan Zee is a pleasant seaside resort with a combination of old woods, beach, sea and dunes. The beaches are long and wide and there are several beach bars. In the summers, when the weather is nice, they are open every day. You can go there for a refreshing drink but also for a delicious lunch. Along the Zeiler Boulevard, the road along the dunes, you will find several restaurants. There is also a beautiful Sea Aquarium where you can see the wonders of the sea.

Art and culture in Bergen

If you are an art lover, Bergen is the place to visit. You can do so all year round. Bergen is the favorite residence of many artists. The tranquility and space that the village exudes is a fine source of inspiration for them. The village has many galleries and an artists' center. In the summer you can browse the art and artistic markets. In October, the Art Ten Days event takes place. Then the village has plenty of exhibitions by different artists with surprising works. In the museum Kranenburgh there are changing exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. With some regularity, the museum shows its own collection, including the painters of the Bergen School. Museum Het Sterkenhuis is also called the treasure chamber of Bergen. Visit this museum to see the cultural history of the municipality of Bergen. You will find a period room with furniture from the 19th century, costumes and a period kitchen.

In the middle of the village among the restaurants and cafes is the Ruined Church. There is a mosaic floor of countless pebbles in different colors and the roof vault is beautifully painted. Today this special location can be rented.

Shopping in Bergen

Bergen may be a small village but you can indulge in shopping. The stores are also open every Sunday. You will find the best boutiques in the home and fashion sector. A day of shopping can of course be combined with the pleasant terraces that Bergen offers.

Events in the artists’ village of Bergen
